The name of our property, "Kypuka", originates from the Hawaiian word kīpuka that means an intense contrast between an area and what surrounds it, and what emerges from it. The prefix, “kī” is an intensifier, and “puka” means a hole, or to emerge or appear. The word kīpuka is most commonly associated with the islands of vegetation and life spared and surrounded by barren lava flows, but also think: a calm spot in a rough sea, an opening in a dense forest, a fertile spot in a desert, the sky showing through a break in the clouds, a natural green spaces surrounded by urban/suburban development — all of these are kīpuka. We altered the spelling of kīpuka to reflect that this island of life is in Kentucky (KY), therefore calling it Kypuka.

The Kypuka is largely made up of a woodland area mainly comprised of Eastern Red Cedars, followed by a wetland area in the middle, and the area by the road is a bit of a meadow.
